Initial Exploration

A round up of our initial concept submissions with many elements from each direction making it into the final design.

We created a contemporary new look for Lewa House, while carefully preserving its rustic and authentic charm

The full scope of this project involved a total rethink of the Lewa House identity and online presence. We worked closely with the Lewa House team to evolve their brand, maintaining the essence of what makes Lewa so special, whilst giving it a more contemporary feel in order to appeal to a wider audience.

Along with creating a new logo mark and introducing a more refined suite of typography, we carefully selected a new set of brand colours featuring warm and earthy tones, inspired by the vibrant Lewa landscape. This was supported by hand drawn elements to add to the rugged charm of the brand, which aimed to emulate the unique experience they offer as a travel destination.

An immersive storytelling experience that encourages users to explore the wonders Lewa has to offer

We created an explorative journey for users to discover Lewa’s wonders in a nonlinear, organic way. The site still contains a more traditional navigation, allowing users to quickly access information if needed, but the main flow aims to lead users on an exciting, meandering path of discovery.

Guided by Sophie, the lodge owner, users are taken on a journey of discovery; learning about Lewa’s history and deep connection to the wildlife they protect. Bringing Lewa’s story to life was our number one priority. We created a highly interactive narrative that ran through the site making use of purposeful animation, gamified features, and rich media.

The Lewa landscape brought to life through an immersive 3D experience

The interactive map sits at the epicentre of the journey, encouraging users to engage with the content on a deeper, more emotional level. Main page links are positioned among educational and informative content which can all be viewed without leaving the map.

Generating the terrain

There were two main challenges when creating Lewa’s map. We first needed to create the 3D geometry of the land using limited topographic data, and next we needed to create an accurate texture for the terrain ensuring the plains, rivers and forest were all represented accurately. Satellite imagery of Lewa was basic, so we utilised Gaea world generator and Substance Painter to build on the data we did have and procedurally added detail to the geometry and texture. The map was then built in WebGL and uses the tiled 4k texture we created custom.

Responsive

With mobile browsing dominating the tourism industry, particular attention was paid to perfecting performance and functionality on handheld devices.

& Immersive

Even on these devices the interactive map offers an immersive and memorable way to discover the unique experiences Lewa has to offer.
